University of Malta to introduce new degree course: Bachelor of Science in HLT

The University of Malta's Institute of Linguistics (IoL) will be offering the new degree course (Bachelor of Science in Human Language Technology) as from next October. The development of this degree programme is expected to bring with it new research opportunities. -

The European Commission is organising on 5-6 December 2011 its first Innovation Convention following the adoption of the Innovation Union Flagship initiative in October 2010. It will include a key exhibition in the heart of Brussels showcasing the latest research and innovation results being developed in Europe under EU funding. In 2009, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced its method for assigning internationalized domain names (IDNs) for non-Latin generic top level domains (gTLDs). Now ICANN has granted approval to India to administer gTLDs in Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali and Telugu. The new “dotBharat” namespaces will become available over the next six months. We see tremendous opportunity for internet content and applications in Indic languages but technical hurdles still remain. -

Ginger.io, a startup spun out of the MIT Media Lab, aims to use data collected automatically from mobile phones to warn users and their physicians that they may be on the verge of a manic episode or a bout of debilitating illness. The company has developed a mobile-phone app called DailyData that analyzes information on the user's location and the frequency of calls and text messages to determine whether that person is having health problems. -

The Family Safety in Auslan project created and produced a set of web-based video resources in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) aimed at the prevention of family and domestic violence, and awareness of support services. Auslan is a recognised community language and is the natural language of the Australian Deaf community. The videos will be made available to the Australian Deaf Community through the Deaf Society of NSW website. -

Nuance Communications Inc. announced that it has acquired a Swiss company that provides voice-enabled capabilities for in-car systems and consumer electronics. Nuance, a speech recognition technology company based in Burlington, Mass., said it has acquired SVOX AG, a privately-held company. Nuance did not disclose any terms of the deal. -

Google has revealed some of the upcoming features its search engine will offer soon, including a voice search capability similar to that found on its mobile app. Users will also be able to search for images that are similar to an image they select, and a pre-loading feature will speed up the process of getting to one's desired page. Some of the features, however, will require users to surf on a particular browser. -

IBM expects to transfer the technology to healthcare in the next 12 to 18 months, shared Wilcox. One of the first use cases of the technology will be diagnostic assistance. Diagnostic errors often come from not considering all of the possibilities, shared Herbert Chase, MD, professor of clinical medicine in biomedical informatics at Columbia University School of Medicine in New York City. “To practice medicine at its highest level we need to know what is known today.
