A Discourse is a piece of language including more than one sentence. A Dialogue is a linguistic exchange involving more than one participant. Discourse and dialogue therefore encompasses almost all non-local phenomena in language, but in particular discourse coherence, anaphoric dependencies, dialogue structure and the relation between questions and answers. The most obvious practical application in this area is dialogue systems and, more recently, spoken dialogue systems.
