Shallow Parsing

definition: Shallow parsing refers to a class of techniques for identifying phrasal chunks in texts without assigning deep hierarchical structures. Cascaded finite-state models are often used for shallow parsing. Shallow parsing techniques are used because they are more time-efficient and more error-tolerant than "deep" parsers, and give rise to fewer ambiguities.
